Peer-led program encourages healthier snack choices
In Louisiana, the Children, Youth and Families at Risk (CYFAR) grant, leveraged by support from the LSU AgCenter, encourages youth to create positive change in their communities. At one school, CYFAR students noticed a growing issue: Many of their peers were choosing unhealthy snacks during the school day.
To encourage better choices, the students created a “Healthy Snack Swap Challenge.” For one week, students were invited to swap their usual snacks for healthier options. The CYFAR team set up a station offering nutritious choices like granola bars, fresh fruit, dried fruit, popcorn, baked chips, coconut water and protein shakes. Their goal was to show that healthy snacks can be both tasty and energizing.
The initiative reached 219 students, with 93% reporting they learned something new about healthy choices, felt confident making better decisions and made healthier choices during the program. Additionally, 94% plan to continue choosing healthier snacks.
Collectively, these findings underscore the initiative’s impact, not only in educating youth about healthy eating but also in empowering them to maintain healthier lifestyles in the long term.
