Free tax prep pays dividends
Paying taxes is a civic responsibility that funds essential public services. Unfortunately, many people face barriers to affordable, accurate tax preparation. Free tax assistance programs, such as the IRS-sponsored Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE), offer high-quality services to low-income earners, students, retirees, individuals with disabilities and limited English-speaking taxpayers.
In 2025, Kansas State Research and Extension delivered free tax preparation services through VITA and TCE for tax year 2024. These programs serve individuals earning less than $67,000 annually and people with disabilities or limited English proficiency. All volunteers completed IRS-approved tax law training, which includes strict protocols for maintaining taxpayer privacy and confidentiality.
Seven Extension agents and 89 trained volunteers prepared 7,322 federal and state tax returns. The participating Kansas taxpayers saved roughly $1.68 million in preparation fees (average of $230 per return). Clients collectively received more than $7.4 million in refunds, including over $1.66 million in Earned Income Tax Credits, averaging $1,011 per household or 3% of their average income. Additional benefits included Child Tax Credits, Education Credits and Homestead/Safe Senior refunds.
The combination of tax refunds and savings on preparation fees provided meaningful financial relief, enabling individuals and families to meet essential needs, reduce debt and work toward long-term financial goals. The money stays in the local economy and supports Kansas businesses.
