Farm pesticide training program decreases drift complaints in Georgia
For many family farms, pesticides provide the foundation for effective pest management. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s pursuit of protecting endangered species in accordance with the Endangered Species Act is challenging the practical use of these tools.
In response, University of Farm pesticide training program decreases drift complaints in Georgia Extension participates in a joint effort that protects both family farms and wildlife through the state’s flagship pesticide stewardship program, Using Pesticides Wisely. Through the program, started in 2015, pesticide applicators are provided the latest research focused on factors that contribute to ensuring pesticides are applied on-target.
During 2023, 2,718 pesticide applicators attended 21 trainings to obtain the latest research for improved on-target pesticide applications. Attendees represented 1.9 million acres of land. Since its inception, 17,130 individuals have attended the training leading to over an 80% reduction in pesticide drift complaints made to UGA Extension.
