Preparing Oregon’s youths for leadership, lifelong success
Oregon employers report that many youths enter the workforce without essential employability skills, including communication, teamwork and time management. To address this gap, Oregon State University Extension Service 4‑H Youth Development partnered with the Umatilla School District after‑school program to create the Teens as Leaders curriculum.
In 2024, 12 youths completed a 10‑hour, weeklong training focused on leadership, communication, teamwork, delegation, time management and classroom management through hands‑on learning and real‑world scenarios. One‑day workshops during the school year reinforce skills, and annual trainings allow new youths to participate. Participants receive certificates to support future employment and résumé development.
Youths reported increased understanding of employability skills and greater confidence applying them in real‑world settings. While serving as facilitators and student employees in the after‑school program, participants strengthened leadership, communication and teamwork skills, developed stronger peer connections and improved planning abilities. The program also established a sustainable annual training model to support ongoing workforce readiness among district youths.
By building employability and leadership skills in teens, Oregon State is strengthening Oregon’s future workforce, supporting local employers and preparing youths to contribute productively to their communities and economy.
