Oklahoma “Strong Dads” program strengthens father-child bonds
In response to the prevalence of absent fathers in Oklahoma homes, Oklahoma State University Extension collaborated with Oklahoma Human Services to launch the “Strong Dads” program in September 2023. This 12-week initiative operates across nine counties, focuses on reinforcing the father-child bond and is offered in both English and Spanish Participants. The program encompasses those facing economic or relational stress, and participants actively engage in weekly workshops facilitated by a designated coach.
The program has successfully reached and involved 126 fathers, spanning 17 venues, including correctional facilities. Comprehensive assessments reveal notable enhancements in parenting skills and an augmented sense of hope among participants. A standout success story emerged as a participant seeking custody found support within the program, impressing a judge who subsequently removed obstacles. This participant is now progressing towards full-time custody and expresses eagerness to contribute to future classes.
Beyond individual success stories, the impact of the “Strong Dads” program has garnered interest beyond its initial scope. A representative from Oklahoma Human Services, inspired by the positive influence witnessed in a specific court case, expresses interest in implementing the program in her county.
Project supported by state appropriations.
