Engaged Neighbors Programs reduce social neighborhood isolation in Missouri
With increasing social isolation impacting American life, the University of Missouri Extension launched the Engaged Neighbor Programs in 2019, recognizing neighborhoods as key to rebuilding social connections. This effort led to the establishment of Missouri Good Neighbor Week in 2022, a statewide initiative promoting civic engagement and stronger communities.
In 2024, the weeklong celebration inspired over 31,000 acts of neighboring, engaging nearly 3,000 participants in activities ranging from yard work assistance to appreciation events for first responders. Five cities were honored as the ‘Most Neighborly,’ and 22 individuals were recognized as the ‘Most Engaged Neighbors’ of the year.
By fostering community connections, Missouri Good Neighbor Week combats the epidemic of loneliness, improving individual well-being and strengthening civic life. Engaged neighbors create safer, healthier and more resilient communities — one act of kindness at a time.
