Yurok Tribe partners with Oregon State University researchers to improve water quantity and quality

In the Klamath Basin, dams have caused many water quality and environmental problems. Farmers and ranchers have dealt with frequent water shortages, and tribal nations and fishing communities have reported declining fish populations. The Yurok tribe — the largest Indigenous tribe in California and the original inhabitants of the Klamath Basin — has partnered with Oregon State University researchers to remove four dams on the Klamath River and help restore some of the natural environment. Including both Western science and Indigenous knowledge paves the way for more effective, appropriate and sustainable management decisions.
