Ferry Plaza Farmers Market, Jayme Smawley adjust display of organic produce

In California, Extension is helping to improve the farming practices of small urban farmers. Many urban areas have adopted ordinances to facilitate farming in the city. More than 500 participants attended trainings in the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, Sacramento and San Diego to learn more about food safety, legal and regulatory basics, production issues and business and marketing techniques.

Follow up after the workshops indicated that because of the trainings, 68% had identified food safety risks on their farm, 54% had improved their marketing efforts, 53% implemented a food safety plan, 50% improved their soil management practices and 50% had managed a pest by using what they learned.
