Immigrant farmworkers receive healthcare support

A Vermont program is providing important health outreach to immigrant farmworkers, a source of labor the agriculture industry depends on.The Bridges to Health program, a collaboration involving Extension specialists and healthcare providers, delivers healthcare services and assistance to allow farmworkers to remain physically, mentally and emotionally healthy. The program helps workers on local farms better communicate urgent and preventative care needs to employers so that the workers can receive timely, affordable care.Bridges to Health helped 450 immigrant farmworkers and family members gain access to healthcare services at more than 90 health sites. For employers, the program hashelped them avoid the costs of health-related absenteeism, turnover, lost productivity and expertise, and decreased the need to hire and train replacement workers.
