Florida evaluates potential for industrial hemp

Industrial hemp could be an attractive alternative for Florida growers after approval by federal and state legislation authorizing production. The University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences educated growers on the different aspects and options of growing industrial hemp in the state, and growers want to learn more about its viability and potential to add to the current crop portfolio as an alternative crop.

A two-year research pilot project yielded several positive results. The hemp program emphasized research in nutrient management and best management practices for water quality. UF/IFAS Extension emphasized efforts to establish educational materials and engagement for hemp growers and stakeholders in Florida and beyond.

The core team trained 17 Extension agents distributed throughout the state. Recorded presentations, factsheets and other educational materials were submitted by 20 presenters from across UF/IFAS. Growers and stakeholders participated in virtual workshops, online access to the materials and through the Science by the Slice podcast.
