Dairy goat webinar increases understanding of production programs
The Dairy Herd Improvement Program was created to help improve the selection within dairy herds through the national Dairy Herd Improvement Association, a testing and evaluation association coordinated by Extension educators and regional supervisors.
After stay-at-home restrictions banned face-to-face events in Indiana during the COVID-19 pandemic, Purdue Extension educators in two Indiana counties collaborated to offer a webinar on Dairy Herd Improvement Testing for goats covering a broad overview of the national program, and how it is used within two dairy goat registries in the United States.
These educational efforts provided clear explanations and guidance about dairy goat production testing. Small ruminant herd owners need information and clarification about the national Dairy Herd Improvement program.
Seventy percent of survey respondents reported greater confidence in selecting a Dairy Herd Improvement test type that fits their herd, and more than 50% of participants said they now understand where to send their samples for testing.
